Each of us holds certain memories from our high school experience. Some memories were positive, perhaps some less than positive. Some of our memories involve a favorite teacher, event or activity. Some memories involve sports, drama or community service. In most cases, no matter who we were in high school or what we did while we were there, we all considered ourselves members of the school community.
This Saturday, we celebrate SSVT Homecoming with a football game and a dance. For some of our students, this will be their high school memory. For some of our alumni, this will be an opportunity to reconnect with SSVT.
In the past few weeks, in addition to taking care of what we generally consider to be “school business”, there have been many discussions about our mascot. Who will be the mascot? What will we name the mascot? Why does he live in my office?
“Mascots are extremely important for schools and sport teams. But why? A mascot can be an object or a person and their importance lies in the fact that they are believed to bring good luck which helps in boosting up the moral of a sport team or a school.” (Taken from The Importance of Mascots by Joe Maldonado)
Although you will not find it anywhere in the curriculum framework, I would like to suggest that “embracing” our Viking may be as important to our school community as the many other topics that we explore and discuss. I have been out of high school for a long time, but my friends and I still consider ourselves Warriors at heart. Thanks to the many faculty members who took the time to vote for the name, and to those of you who had “alternate” suggestions! Your responses were very funny and it set the perfect tone to end the week.
Have a great long weekend!
